Dharma Daivam emerged from the ancestral worship traditions of North Malabar where the concept of dharma was not abstract philosophy but a living, enforceable social code. The deity represents the accumulated moral authority of deceased elders whose sense of justice was so powerful it transcended death and became a worshipped force.

In ancient times, a village elder known for his unshakeable sense of justice died without resolving a great dispute that threatened to tear the community apart. His spirit could not rest while injustice remained. He returned as Dharma Daivam, appearing at the village shrine to pronounce judgement. The disputing families, hearing the voice of their departed elder speak through the performer, accepted the verdict and peace was restored.
