Maakaali represents the indigenous North Malabar interpretation of Kali worship, distinct from the Tantric Kali of Bengal or the temple Kali of other Kerala traditions. This form emerged from the convergence of tribal goddess worship and Shakta philosophy, rooted in the sacred groves where the boundary between the wild forest and human settlement was most charged with spiritual energy.
