A great pestilence once descended upon the villages of Kannur, carried by foul winds from the south. No remedy could stop its spread. The village oracle declared that only the goddess in her wind-form could match the speed of the disease. The women of the village gathered at the crossroads and performed a circular dance through the night, spinning faster and faster until a great whirlwind descended from the sky. Within the vortex stood Chuzhali Bhagavathi, her hair streaming like storm clouds. She swept through every lane and household, and where she passed, the sickness was torn away like dead leaves in a gale.
