Vellattam is a distinct category within the Theyyam tradition — a preliminary ritual that precedes the full Kolam performance. Thondachan Vellattam serves as the invocation phase for the Thondachan spirit, performed in Kasargod where the Thondachan tradition has particular strength. It preserves the older, less elaborate ritual style that may predate the full theatrical Theyyam form.

It is said that when the Thondachan spirit first made himself known to the people of Kasargod, he appeared not as a fierce warrior but as a gentle presence at the edge of their village. He asked only for a simple offering and a song. The elders, moved by his humility, sang through the night, and the spirit revealed more of himself with each verse. This first encounter — quiet, unhurried, without the full regalia of war — became the model for the Vellattam, the gentle calling-forth that must happen before the full power of Thondachan can manifest.

ആചാരങ്ങളും അവതരണവും
The Vellattam is performed the evening before the main Thondachan Theyyam. The performer wears white cloth with minimal face painting — usually just turmeric and sandalwood paste. There is no elaborate crown, only a simple headband. The performance consists mainly of slow, rhythmic movements and devotional singing that gradually builds in intensity. The Vellattam concludes with the performer entering a mild trance state, signalling that the spirit has acknowledged the invitation and will return in full form the next day.
