Angakkaran is part of the Andalur Kavu Theyyam cycle, where the Ramayana narrative has been uniquely localised. At Andalur, epic characters are worshipped as living presences. Angakkaran represents Lakshmana — Rama's loyal younger brother — adapted into the North Malabar ritual framework.

When the divine essences of the Ramayana heroes were distributed across Malabar's sacred sites, Lakshmana's spirit was drawn to Andalur Kavu. He chose to stand beside his brother's shrine as he had stood beside Rama throughout exile — watchful, armed, and ready. During the annual festival, Angakkaran's Theyyam always faces outward, eyes scanning the perimeter, exactly as Lakshmana would have guarded Panchavati.

The performer wears green-and-gold Vaishnavite costume and carries a bow and arrow at the ready. Vigilant patrol-like movements around the Andalur shrine, circling three times before taking sentinel position. The performance includes recitation of Lakshmana's oath of loyalty. The performer keeps his gaze fixed outward — embodying the eternal watchman.
