Bappuran is the localised Malabar name for Hanuman within the Andalur Kavu Theyyam cycle. The Ramayana's monkey-warrior was absorbed into the Theyyam tradition as a fully realised deity with his own distinct ritual cycle. The name derives from a local honorific, reflecting how the community claimed the epic figure as their own.

When Rama's divine essence settled at Andalur, Hanuman followed — for he had vowed never to be separated from his lord. He became Bappuran, the one who leaps between the world of gods and humans, carrying prayers upward and blessings downward. During his Theyyam, Bappuran's energy is so immense he can be heard before he is seen — his roar shaking the trees, his leaps covering the entire temple courtyard.

Bappuran's performance is the most physically demanding in the Andalur cycle — extraordinary leaps, somersaults, and acrobatic movements embodying Hanuman's agility. The face painting is bold deep orange and red. A long cloth tail whips through the air during leaps. The performer carries a mace and at the climax lifts a large boulder-like prop overhead while roaring Hanuman's war cry.
