Palloor Kavu is one of the oldest sacred groves in the Payyanur region, with roots believed to extend back over five hundred years. The kavu is maintained by the local community who have preserved both the ecological sanctity of the grove and the ritual traditions within it. What makes Palloor Kavu exceptional is the survival of rare Theyyam forms that have disappeared from many other venues — forms that are performed only here and at a handful of other groves. The annual Kaliyattam is a multi-day affair that draws scholars and Theyyam enthusiasts who come to witness these rare performances. The grove itself is a rich repository of biodiversity, with ancient trees, medicinal plants, and wildlife that are protected by the sacred status of the site.
