Kelan was a Pulayan drummer of such extraordinary ability that people from distant villages would travel to hear him play. His rhythm was said to make the earth itself vibrate differently. A temple committee invited him to perform at a major festival — an unprecedented honour for a man of his caste. He played for seven hours. The audience was transfixed. But the performance created a problem the committee had not anticipated: no upper-caste drummer would perform after Kelan, because they knew they could not match him. This was intolerable. A group of men ambushed Kelan on his walk home. They broke his hands first — then killed him. They threw his drum into a river. But the drum was found downstream the next morning, playing by itself. The sound continued for three days. Those who had planned the murder fell ill one by one. The community, horrified, installed Kelan as a deity. His Theyyam performance always begins with a drum solo that no living drummer claims to have composed.

The performance begins with an extended drum solo that can last over thirty minutes. The performer's body paint is minimal — dark ash marks. The Theyyam carries a drum and dances with it in a way that combines martial movement with musical performance. The deity is believed to judge those with artistic talent who have been denied recognition due to their social position.
