Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathy temple, known as Madayi Kavu, is considered the mother temple of Bhadrakali worship in North Kerala. This 2000-year-old shrine predates Vedic times and has been associated with dynasties including the Mushikas, Kolathunadu, and Chirakkal, who regarded the fierce goddess Bhadrakali as their family deity. According to legend, Madayikkavilamma originally resided at Taliparamba Rajarajeshwara temple but, being non-vegetarian, required a separate temple. The king built this shrine for her. During Hyder Ali's invasion of Malabar around 1780, the temple was desecrated — a local Nair warrior named Vengayil Chathukutty beheaded the person responsible and delivered the severed head to temple authorities. The annual Kaliyattam features Thiruvarkadu Bhagavathi alongside Someswari, Kalaratri, Vettuva Chekavar, and other powerful forms.

തിരുവർകാട്ട് ഭഗവതി ക്ഷേത്രം, മാടായി കാവ് എന്ന് അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്, വടക്കൻ കേരളത്തിലെ ഭദ്രകാളി ആരാധനയുടെ മാതൃ ക്ഷേത്രം. 2000 വർഷം പഴക്കമുള്ള ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം വേദ കാലഘട്ടത്തിന് മുൻപുള്ളത്. മുശിക, കൊളത്തുനാട്, ചിറയ്ക്കൽ രാജവംശങ്ങൾ ഭദ്രകാളിയെ കുലദേവതയായി. ഹൈദരാലിയുടെ മലബാർ ആക്രമണ കാലത്ത് (1780) ക്ഷേത്രം അശുദ്ധമാക്കപ്പെട്ടു — നായർ യോദ്ധൃ വെങ്ങായിൽ ചാത്തുക്കുട്ടി ഉത്തരവാദിയെ ശിരശ്ഛേദം ചെയ്ത് തലയോട്ടി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചു.
