Kottiyoor is one of the most sacred and mysterious temple complexes in Kerala, consisting of two shrines — Akkare Kottiyoor (the far-bank temple) and Ikkare Kottiyoor (the near-bank temple) — separated by the Bavali River deep in the Western Ghats forests. The site is believed to be where Daksha's Yaga took place, the mythological sacrifice that ended in catastrophe when Sati immolated herself and Shiva unleashed his destructive fury. The Akkare temple has no permanent structure — rituals are conducted in a natural forest clearing accessible only during the annual Vaisakha Mahotsavam in June–July. The connection to Theyyam runs deep: several Theyyam forms in the region draw their mythological origins from the events at Daksha Yaga. The forest setting, river crossing, and absence of conventional temple architecture make Kottiyoor unlike any other shrine in Kerala.
