Kurumathur Bhagavathi Temple is deeply associated with the legend of Muchilottu Bhagavathi — the Brahmin girl Parakkutty who mastered the Vedas but was falsely accused of impurity and killed. Resurrected by Lord Shiva with divine powers, she became a fierce protector goddess. The temple at Kurumathur is one of the 109 shrines dedicated to Muchilottu Bhagavathi across Kannur district, and its annual festival is considered one of the most important. The multi-day Kaliyattam draws thousands, with the Muchilottu Bhagavathi Theyyam as the centrepiece — an awe-inspiring performance featuring elaborate face painting, towering headgear, and the dramatic enactment of the goddess's origin story. The temple also hosts Bhadrakali and Gulikan performances during the festival.
