Panchuruli belongs to the Shaivite strand of the Theyyam tradition but carries distinctly local characteristics. The 'five' in his name connects to the Pancha Bhoota (five elements) philosophy but also to five specific aspects of destructive energy that the tradition identifies: fire that burns without fuel, water that rises without rain, earth that shakes without cause, wind that blows from nowhere, and sky that darkens at noon.

Five villages along a river experienced five different calamities simultaneously: one village's wells turned bitter, another's livestock died, a third experienced unexplained fires, a fourth suffered a windstorm that destroyed only the granaries, and the fifth saw its river section turn red for three days. No single cause could explain all five events. An assembly of oracles from all five villages entered a collective trance and delivered the same message independently: a force had been disturbed in the hills above the river — not a deity but an elemental energy that maintained the balance between the five forces of nature. Human activity had disrupted this balance, and each village was experiencing the consequence of a different element gone wrong. The Panchuruli Theyyam was established as a collective ritual involving all five villages, performed annually at the point where all five village boundaries met.
