When Sati, Shiva's beloved wife, immolated herself at her father Daksha's sacrificial ceremony — humiliated by Daksha's refusal to honour Shiva — the lord of destruction tore a lock from his matted hair and dashed it upon the ground. From that lock arose Veerabhadran, a being of pure rage with a thousand arms and eyes of fire. He descended upon Daksha's ceremony, scattered the gods, destroyed the sacrificial altar, and beheaded Daksha himself. In the Theyyam tradition, Veerabhadran's fury is channelled into protecting devotees from injustice.

The performer's movements alternate between controlled meditative stillness and explosive bursts of furious energy, reflecting Shiva's nature as both ascetic and destroyer.
