Kalaratri draws from the pan-Indian Navadurga tradition where she is the seventh form of Durga — the embodiment of the darkest night. In the Theyyam tradition of Kannur, she has been localised into a distinctly Malabar form, merging Tantric goddess worship with the region's folk spirit traditions. She is invoked specifically against the most intractable forms of evil.

In the darkest age, when demons grew so powerful they could hide within shadows themselves, the gods needed a goddess who was darkness itself. Kalaratri emerged — not fighting the dark but being the dark, and therefore sovereign over all that lurked within it. She walked through the night, and every demon, every evil spirit, every malevolent force cowered before one whose darkness was greater and more absolute than their own.
