Veera Chamundi draws from the pan-Indian Chamunda tradition but takes a distinctly martial character in North Malabar. The 'Veera' prefix emphasises her warrior aspect above all else. She is worshipped primarily in Kannur's kavus where the memory of martial conflicts and territorial battles is preserved through her fierce form.

The face paint is dominated by fierce red and black patterns with exaggerated fangs painted at the mouth. The ritual often includes the dramatic destruction of symbolic effigies representing evil forces.
