Thoovakari represents a uniquely domestic aspect of the divine feminine in the Theyyam tradition. A prosperous household fell into ruin — quarrels, illness, livestock dying. An oracle revealed years of neglected rituals had allowed spiritual impurity to accumulate. That night, a woman appeared carrying a sacred palm-frond broom. Without a word, she swept every room. Where her broom touched, a faint golden light trailed. By dawn, the house was transformed. She was Thoovakari — the divine sweeper.

ആചാരങ്ങളും അവതരണവും
The performer carries a ritual broom and moves through the performance space in sweeping motions, cleansing every direction. The face painting uses warm ochre and gold tones. The ritual extends beyond the shrine — the performer may sweep nearby homes' courtyards, considered deeply auspicious. The climax involves sweeping a large circle around the community gathering, sealing a purified boundary.
