Pulamaruthan represents Nandikeshwara — Shiva's eternal bull-mount and devoted attendant — in the Pottan narrative. When Shiva took the form of a Pulayan, his faithful companion Nandi also transformed, becoming the humble servant Pulamaruthan. This form highlights how the entire divine household chose solidarity with the marginalised.

Nandikeshwara, ever loyal to Shiva, could not bear to let his master walk among humans alone. When Shiva transformed into Pottan, Nandi begged to accompany him. Shiva agreed, and Nandikeshwara became Pulamaruthan — walking behind the couple as their servant, carrying their meagre possessions. When Shankaracharya demanded they leave the road, Pulamaruthan stood firm alongside his master. His presence proved that divine loyalty transcends all social boundaries — even Shiva's own mount chose the identity of the lowest caste over his celestial form.

Pulamaruthan is performed as part of the Pottan ensemble, walking behind Pottan and Pulachamundi. The costume is the simplest of the three — a loincloth, bare torso, and a carrying bundle slung over one shoulder. The performer's movements are deliberately servile, head bowed, steps measured. Yet at the moment of revelation, Pulamaruthan straightens to full height, the humble servant transformed into the celestial Nandi.

Pulamaruthan completes the theological argument of the Pottan cycle. If Shiva and Parvati chose to become untouchables, even their celestial attendant did the same. The message is total: divinity does not merely sympathise with the marginalised — it inhabits their identity wholly and willingly, from master to servant.
