Pulachamundi is an integral part of the Pottan Theyyam narrative cycle, representing Parvati Devi in her disguised form. While Pottan embodies Shiva's challenge to caste, Pulachamundi embodies the Shakti dimension of the same message. The tradition is ancient, rooted in the same Shaivite-Shakti synthesis that characterises Malabar's indigenous worship.

When Lord Shiva decided to test Shankaracharya, Parvati Devi took the form of Pulachamundi — a Pulayan woman carrying a child on her hip. She walked beside Pottan as his wife, embodying the completeness of the divine couple even in their lowest social disguise. While Pottan posed the philosophical challenge, Pulachamundi's silent presence with the child was equally devastating: here was a mother and infant, denied the right to walk on a public road. Her form reminded the philosopher that his teachings of universal Brahman excluded the most vulnerable — women and children of the lowest caste.

Pulachamundi is performed alongside Pottan Theyyam, never independently. The performer wears simple, worn clothing and carries a cloth-wrapped bundle representing the infant child. The face painting uses earthy ochre tones with minimal ornamentation. During the performance, Pulachamundi remains beside Pottan during the confrontation scene, occasionally rocking the bundle-child, her silence serving as a powerful counterpoint to Pottan's words.
