Moothamma, meaning 'elder mother,' is the senior complement to Elayamma in the paired goddess tradition of Kannur's kavus. She represents the culmination of feminine divine energy — the matriarch whose authority comes from experience, suffering, and deep knowledge of the cycles of life and death.

The elder sister who descended with Elayamma took upon herself the harder burdens — guarding against disease, mediating death, and carrying the sorrows of the community. Where Elayamma brought joy, Moothamma brought the harder gift of wisdom born from endurance. She sat at the village threshold, knowing every family's secrets and sorrows, offering counsel that only age and experience could provide.

Moothamma's performance is measured and deliberate, with slow, authoritative movements that convey accumulated wisdom. The performer speaks at length, offering advice and pronouncements to families. The costume is more subdued than many Theyyam forms — deep earth tones with silver accents. Elders in the community gather especially close during her performance.
