Kshethrapalaka represents a variant guardian tradition within the Shaivite Theyyam forms. While Kshetrapalakan guards the inner sanctum, Kshethrapalaka is assigned to the outer boundaries — roads, crossroads, and forest edges surrounding the sacred site. This reflects the layered security system of ancient temple complexes with multiple guardian deities at concentric rings.

When Shiva assigned Kshetrapalakan to guard the inner temple, he realised threats could approach long before reaching the walls. From Kshetrapalakan's shadow at sunset, Shiva drew forth Kshethrapalaka — the guardian of approaches. Unlike his inner counterpart who stands at the threshold, Kshethrapalaka patrols through the darkness outside the temple walls, ensuring no malevolent force can even begin the journey toward sacred ground.

ആചാരങ്ങളും അവതരണവും
Performed outside the temple compound, often at the main crossroad. Begins in near-total darkness with a single oil lamp. The performer moves outward in expanding circles, reaching the village's furthest boundaries before returning. The face painting uses deep charcoal and ash tones — darker than Kshetrapalakan's. A staff and iron bell are carried, rung at each boundary marker.
