Built on the site where the divine child Muthappan settled after leaving his Brahmin foster home, this temple on the banks of the Valapattanam River is unlike any other in Kerala. The principal deity is worshipped through daily Theyyam performances — Thiruvappana (the elaborate form) in the morning and Vellattam (the simpler form) in the evening. Fish, toddy, and meat are the customary offerings — substances forbidden in almost every other Hindu temple. Dogs are sacred here, with idols at both entrances. The temple is managed by the Thiyya community, with Vannan performers conducting the daily rituals. It draws visitors from all faiths and castes without distinction.
