The Nileshwaram region, once part of the ancient Kolathunadu kingdom, is among the richest areas for Theyyam in Kerala. The area contains an extraordinary density of sacred groves (kavus), ancestral homes (tharavadus), and temples where Theyyam is performed annually. Many of the performances here are intimate, family-level rituals held in tharavadu compounds — smaller than the grand temple festivals but often considered more authentic and spiritually charged. The region is particularly associated with Vishnumoorthy Theyyam, owing to Palanthai Kannan's origins in nearby Nileshwaram. Theyyam.net's calendar lists more performances in the Nileshwaram area than any other single region.
