Neeliyar Kottam is a sacred grove spread across 20.18 acres at Mangattuparamba near Dharmasala in Kannur district, controlled by members of the Cheriya Veedu family of the Kulala community. The deity here is Neeliyamma, also called Kottathamma (Mother of the Grove). According to legend, Neeli was a wise and beautiful woman who was betrayed and murdered by a local king. Her spirit transformed into a bloodthirsty demon. But when a man recognised the compassion still within her and treated her as a mother, she transformed into a benevolent, protective goddess. The Goddess came along with a priest of Kalikattu Illam returning from Kottiyoor, and asked to be installed in this jungle location where leopards and cattle were seen living together in peace — a sign of her power to reconcile opposing forces. The Kottam is architecturally unique: its sanctum has no roof, open to the sky and the forest canopy above. Unlike most Theyyam temples that hold annual festivals, Neeliyar Bhagavathi Theyyam is performed year-round — devotees offer Theyyam performances for the cure of diseases and the health of children. The Theyyam is famous for its massive headgear — the Valiya Mudi — one of the tallest and most elaborate in the tradition.
