Vayanattu Kulavan Vellattam is the preliminary invocation for the Wayanadu Kulavan Theyyam. The Vellattam preserves the original, unembellished method of calling the ancestor's spirit — simpler than the full Kolam but equally sacred. The ancestor must first be gently awakened before manifesting in full regalia.

The Wayanadu Kulavan ancestor was a great tribal chieftain whose spirit rested in the high mountains after death. He could not be summoned abruptly. The first devotees learned they must sing softly through the night, recounting his deeds in gentle melody. Only after this night-long lullaby of praise would he descend and take on the full Theyyam form. This gentle calling became the Vellattam.

Performed the evening before the full Theyyam, characterised by restraint. White cloth with a turmeric-washed headband. No face painting beyond sandalwood paste. Primarily vocal — extended devotional singing recounting the ancestor's journey from mountains to coast, building from a whisper to full voice. The performer sways gently, eyes closed. No weapons; only a small brass lamp.

Vayanattu Kulavan Vellattam preserves the principle that the sacred cannot be rushed. The Vellattam insists on the slow, patient approach — divine presence must be courted with humility. It also serves as a living archive of oral poetry, since Vellattam songs contain genealogical and geographical information found nowhere else.
