Thondachan was a pepper trader known for a single remarkable quality: he never cheated anyone, even when he easily could have. In a trade where short-weighting, moisture-loading, and grade-mixing were standard practice, his measures were exact. His competitors mocked him for leaving profit on the table. His family suffered financially while less honest merchants prospered. When he died in modest circumstances, his competitors felt vindicated. But within months, every merchant who had cheated a customer began experiencing losses — not catastrophic, but persistent and exactly proportional to the amount they had cheated. A scales-maker reported that his weights had become unreliable. A warehouse owner found his stored pepper mysteriously reduced in quantity. The community understood: Thondachan's spirit was now the auditor of every commercial transaction in the region. His Theyyam was established so the community could annually acknowledge that honesty has a cost — and that the cost is sacred.
