A great fire consumed a village — not an accident but an act of deliberate arson by a rival community during a territorial dispute. Families lost everything: homes, stored grain, cattle, tools. As the survivors gathered in the smoking ruins, a woman who had lost her entire family walked into the still-burning embers of her destroyed home. Those watching screamed and tried to pull her back. But she did not burn. She stood in the fire, her hair lifting in the heat, and began to dance. As she danced, the fire changed colour — from destructive orange to a purifying white-gold. Those watching reported that the heat shifted from a thing that destroyed to a thing that warmed. The woman danced for hours. When she finally stepped out of the embers, her feet were unmarked. She collapsed and died — but in dying, she had transformed the fire from an instrument of enemy hatred into a sacred presence. The village rebuilt, and the Thee Chamundi Theyyam was born.

The performance is centred entirely on fire. A large fire pit is prepared and the performer leaps into and through the flames repeatedly. Burning coconut husks are thrown into the air and caught. The performer runs through lines of fire held by attendants. The climax involves the performer standing motionless in the centre of a ring of fire. Devotees report that the heat in the performance area changes quality — becoming warm rather than painful.
