Manjalamma takes her name from 'manjal' (turmeric), the sacred golden spice that is central to purification, fertility, and auspiciousness in Kerala culture. She represents the agrarian goddess traditions of North Malabar where the fertility of the soil and the fertility of women were understood as manifestations of the same divine feminine energy.

A barren land and a childless woman both prayed to the same divine mother. The goddess appeared, golden as turmeric, and rubbed the sacred spice on the earth and on the woman's forehead. The fields burst with grain and the woman conceived. From that day, Manjalamma was worshipped as the one who bridges the fertility of soil and the fertility of life — her golden touch the link between harvest and birth.

The Manjalamma ritual is saturated in golden hues. The performer is anointed with turmeric paste from head to foot, and turmeric powder is sprinkled over the audience as a blessing.
