Madayil Chamundi is inseparable from the Madayi Kavu temple in Kannur district — one of the most important sacred groves in North Malabar. The temple complex at Madayi hill has been a centre of goddess worship since at least the early medieval period, with connections to the Kolathiri royal family who patronised the tradition.

The goddess chose Madayi hill as her permanent abode after surveying all of Malabar from the skies. She saw that this headland, where the river meets the sea, was a place of convergence — where energies gathered and needed to be channelled by a sovereign divine presence. She descended in her Chamundi form, claiming the hill and its groves forever, declaring that no force would ever dislodge her from this seat of power.

The Madayil Chamundi Theyyam at Madayi Kavu is one of the grandest performances in the entire tradition. The performer dons an elaborate red and gold costume and a towering crown. The ritual involves circumambulation of the entire temple complex, blessing each shrine within the compound. Hundreds of devotees gather from across the district for this annual spectacle.
