Agni Chamundi is a distinct fire goddess form within the Theyyam tradition, separate from the more widely known Thee Chamundi. Rooted in the Shakti tradition of worship, this Theyyam form represents the meeting point of Dravidian fire worship and the pan-Indian Chamunda tradition. The deity is believed to have emerged from the sacred fires of ancient yagnas performed in the Malabar region, where the power of Bhagavathi was invoked through fire to protect communities from epidemics, drought, and evil forces.

In ancient times, a terrible pestilence swept through the villages of Malabar. The people, weakened by disease and famine, gathered at the sacred grove and performed a great fire ritual, calling upon the Bhagavathi to save them. For seven days and seven nights the fire burned, fed by sacred herbs and the prayers of an entire community. On the seventh night, a figure emerged from the flames — a goddess with skin the colour of burning embers, eyes of molten gold, and hair that flowed like smoke. She was Agni Chamundi, born from the fire itself. She strode through the village, and wherever her feet touched the ground, the sickness receded. The pestilence was consumed by her inner fire, and the land was purified. The people vowed to honour her each year with fire rituals, ensuring her protective presence would never leave their borders.

Agni Chamundi Theyyam is dominated by fire. The performance area is ringed with blazing torches, and a large fire pit is prepared at the centre. The performer's face is painted in deep red and black with flame motifs radiating outward. The costume incorporates red and orange fabrics that shimmer in firelight. The central ritual involves the performer dancing around and through the fire pit, handling burning coconut husks and torches with bare hands. At the climax, the performer walks across a wide bed of burning coals while chanting invocations to the Shakti. The entire atmosphere is one of controlled intensity — the heat, the drumming, and the firelight combine to create a sense of the primordial.
