Payyanur Subramanya Temple is one of the oldest shrines in the Payyannur taluk, with origins tracing back to the early Kolathunadu period. The temple is dedicated to Subramanya (Murukan), a deity widely revered across South India, but here worshipped alongside Theyyam traditions unique to North Malabar. The annual festival features elaborate Theyyam performances that bring together multiple communities. The temple has historical connections to the Payyanur Pavithramothiram festival, one of the oldest continuing cultural events in Kerala. It served as a centre of Brahmanical and folk religious synthesis, where Vedic temple rituals and Theyyam coexist harmoniously.
