Karinthalam Sree Vishnumoorthy Temple is one of the most important Vishnumoorthy shrines in Kasargod. The deity Vishnumoorthy in the Theyyam tradition is based on the story of Palanthai Kannan, a devout Vishnu worshipper from the Thiyya community who was persecuted for daring to worship a Brahmanical deity. After his death by immolation, he was elevated to the Theyyam pantheon as Vishnumoorthy — a deity of social justice and devotion that transcends caste. The temple at Karinthalam is particularly renowned for the grandeur of its annual Vishnumoorthy Theyyam, which features the dramatic fire-walking ritual where the performer leaps through blazing flames. The festival also includes Bhagavathi and other Theyyam forms, but the Vishnumoorthy performance is the centrepiece that draws thousands.
